چکیده

A simulation study was conducted to evaluate three terramechanics methods used for predicting single wheel performance of small vehicles on granular terrain. Traditional Bekker-type terramechanics methods do not consider the soil profile, the soil dynamics, or the transient wheel dynamics, which can be important factors in vehicle performance. The ‘dynamic Bekker’ method used to overcome these limitations treats the wheel a free body, which allows for multibody dynamics simulations, and discretizes the soil into grid regions, which allows for more complex soil profiles. Another option is to use the discrete element method, which makes fewer assumptions but requires significantly more computation time. Before these methods can be evaluated in dynamic conditions, they must first be tested in steadystate operation. Single-wheel experiments were performed on Mojave Martian Simulant to evaluate performance at various slip ratios. Similar tests were simulated using three terramechanics methods: traditional Bekker, dynamic Bekker, and the discrete element method. Each method was tuned to match direct shear and pressure-sinkage tests performed on the same soil. While Bekker-type methods only require curve-fitting to determine soil parameters, the discrete element method was tuned by simulating the soil tests with varying parameters. The results from this study will help determine the accuracy of each method during steady-state, and whether the computation cost of the discrete element method is warranted for steady-state conditions.

Modeling of wheel–soil interaction over rough terrain using the discrete element method

A numerical study was conducted using the discrete element method (DEM) to investigate the performance and mobility impacts of rough terrain operation for small unmanned ground vehicles. The DEM simulation was validated using experimental data from two types of single-wheel tests previously published in the literature: straight-line locomotion over flat, level soil, and wheel-digging. Results f...

Modeling and Optimal Control of 4 Wheel Steering Vehicle Using LQR and its Comparison with 2 Wheel Steering Vehicle

In this paper, kinetic and kinematic modeling of a 4 wheel steering vehicle is done and its movement is controlled in an optimal way using Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR). The results are compared with the same control of two-wheel steering case and the advantages are analyzed. In 4 wheel steering vehicles which are nowadays more applicable the number of controlling actuators are more than the...

Back-calculation of mechanical parameters of shell and balls materials from discrete element method simulations

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is extensively used for mathematical modeling and simulating the behavior of discrete discs and discrete spheres in two and three dimensional space, respectively. Prediction of particles flow regime, power draw and kinetic energy for a laboratory or an industrial mill is possible by DEM simulation. In this article, a new approach was used to assess the main paramet...
